Self-brushing accessories
Brushing it is possible to carry out at home. If you choose a mechanical method of processing wood, you should purchase a suitable manual or automatic tool.
to contents ↑Brushes
On sale there are a wide variety of brushes for aging wood. Some of them are better suited for soft wood, others are for hardwood. Some products are used manually and have convenient handles, while others are nozzles for angle grinders, drills.
Grain (the thickness of the bristles) must be selected correctly. This indicator determines the type of wood processing:
- Grain P36. Such tools are intended for deep brushing or aggressive stripping, structuring, texturing of wood. They allow you to smooth out large flaws and restore damaged bases.
- Grain P46. These brushes are used to remove old coatings, eliminate browning.
- Grain P60. Such products are used to remove large burrs that may remain after brushing, as well as to smooth out excessive roughness.
- Grain P80. These brushes are designed for fine grinding and elimination of small burrs after brushing.
- Grain P120. The purpose of using such a tool is finishing polishing of wood, which has undergone decorative processing.
Depending on the shape of the brush, the brush can be as follows:
- Cylindrical. They have the shape of a cylinder and are well suited for removing varnish and paint from a wooden surface. Perfectly emphasize the structure of wood.
- Cupped. Usually used for light texturing of the surface, more suitable for grinding after brushing is already completed.
- Butt. The most convenient in the technique of aging, usually used by professionals, have an optimal arrangement of villi.
Machine tools and machines
Automation of the process is indispensable if you have to process a large volume of wooden products. The following models are considered the most popular for obtaining brushed wood:
- The cleaning mill FESTOOL RUSTOFIX RAS 180. It is implemented with a set of brushes of three types (steel, synthetic, sisal).
- Makita 974 brushing machine. Designed only for machining flat substrates. For corners and joints is not suitable.
- Machine Felisatti AGF 110 / 1010E. It is suitable for working with even and uneven sections of wood; it comes with metal and artificial brushes.

Types of brushes for brushing
In the process of brushing, there are three stages of work - primary (rough) processing, intermediate processing and polishing (grinding) of wood. For correct execution, brushes of different degrees of rigidity are required, and this statement is true for both manual and electric tools. Also, devices for aging differ in size, which determines their cost. Some of them are suitable not only for special brushing machines, but also for grinders thanks to the adapter sleeve.
to contents ↑Metal
Designed for rough (initial) processing of wood. The best brushes have bristles made of brass steel wire. A cheaper option is full steel brushes without brass coating. Any products can be used for hard rocks, brass brushes should be chosen for soft ones. Among the metal tools you can see copper, but for the first stage of brushing they are not suitable and are intended for polishing and finishing of lumber.

At the intermediate stage of brushing, nylon brushes are used. The surface after roughing remains rough, rough, and nylon fibers allow you to even out the relief. Various products in shape and size are on sale, some of them are suitable for mounting on an ordinary grinder.
A nylon tool differs in the following parameters of the villi:
- length;
- density;
- quantity.
Some models have special fibers, in the material of which abrasive particles are pressed. The granularity of the latter also varies: the more carefully the processing should be, the larger the size of the abrasive grains should be selected. The stiffness of nylon brushes is displayed by numbers from 120 to 600. For hard rocks, products with numbers 120-240 are suitable, for soft ones - 400-600.
to contents ↑Nylon fibers are fixed on a plastic or metal base. Despite the high strength of the metal, it is plastic products that last longer. The hairs on them practically do not break, remain flexible, therefore they maintain good performance characteristics for a long time.
Sisal
Such tools are made from thin sisal fibers or from sisal fabric, cords. Externally, they can be rings, circles, wheels for electrical appliances or resemble ordinary paint brushes. Most products are impregnated to increase wear resistance and efficiency: impregnated fibers do not break at a high rotation speed. Sisal brushes are used at the final stage of brushing wood - when polishing.
Buying a good brush for artificially aged wood will provide a significant percentage of luck and will seriously increase the chance of getting a high-quality product. Do not save: it is better to choose a tool that will be easy to use and will last for many years!
