Glue appearance
If CMC is produced according to the standards, it has a certain “appearance” and is distinguished by its characteristic properties. This wallpaper glue is a white powder, which is formed by small granules. It happens that the remedy turns yellow. In this case, the adhesive does not meet the technical requirements and does not have the declared properties. Usually, yellow mass means poor quality of the finished composition, fake or expired powder.
Do not buy yellowed glue, and even more so, try to glue the wallpaper on it. Made without adherence to technology, it is not only able to contain harmful impurities, but can also spoil the wallpaper. As paper, thin or light canvases are glued, yellow spots appear on them, and repairs have to be redone. Also, when buying, you need to pay attention to the uniformity of the powder: only such a product, when diluted with water, forms an even, homogeneous mass without lumps.

Until recently, only one type of CMC glue was produced, the basis of which was carboxymethyl cellulose - a product of cellulose processing (this substance in the abbreviation gave the name to glue). Now the product is produced by many domestic and even foreign brands, and each company includes various additives in it. Most often they are anti-caking agents and antifungal substances (fungicides):
- hydroxybenzene;
- potassium sulfate;
- aluminum sulfate;
- borax (sodium tetraborate);
- carbolic acid.
to contents ↑These substances, despite their synthetic origin, are not harmful to the body. They are especially important for cases when the walls have lost the ability to "breathe" when gluing vinyl, other durable wallpaper. Thanks to antiseptics and fungicides, fungus and mold will not breed on the walls.
Main characteristics
Glue may have different manufacturers, but the average technical parameters of the finished product are respected by everyone. The most important characteristics of the adhesive:
- the proportion of the main dry matter in the composition is 57%;
- the proportion of active substance in relation to the total amount of dry matter is 6%;
- the proportion of sodium chloride of the total dry matter is 21%;
- moisture content in glue - 12%;
- degree of substitution of carboxymethyl groups - 65-85;
- solubility - 96% (minimum);
- the pH of the aqueous solution of 1.5% - 8-11;
- the shelf life of the solution 4% - 7 days;
- the swelling time of the mass until uniform - up to 2 hours.
Application area
Most often, the product is used for its intended purpose - for wallpaper as wallpaper glue. Depending on the variety, it can be used on paper and non-woven, thin and thick, durable vinyl wallpaper and canvas. Also, CMC is allowed to be added to other solutions to increase their strength and adhesive abilities. We are talking about tile glue, chalk and cement putties.
There are other areas where the glue has found application:
- textile production;
- production of drilling glue for the oil and gas industry;
- mining of ore;
- the creation of ceramic products (as a binder);
- production of matches, durable paper with an adhesive layer, household detergents;
- production of varnishes, paints, including facade, water-dispersion;
- faux fur production;
- various biological studies, experiments.
Kinds of CMC glue
Conventionally, all types of adhesives are divided into those that are used for light, moderate and heavy wallpapers. With regard to specific funds, the following varieties of CMC can be found on sale:
- KMTS-1 Chip. Used for gluing paper wallpapers, as well as light washable cloths.
- KMTS-1. Suitable only for paper wallpapers.
- KMTS-N. Suitable for medium and light wallpaper on a paper, textile basis.
- KMTS-N SuperMax. It is applied to any wall-paper when gluing on concrete, the plastered bases.
- KMTS-N MiniMax. Glue for washable wallpaper.
- CMC Extra Fast. Can be bred for priming walls. Suitable for sticker wallpaper to concrete, plaster, dries quickly.
Some brands produce CMC with the addition of PVA. Such a tool is suitable for gluing walls with the most durable, heavy canvases, it reliably holds them without deformation. An important condition: wallpaper should be glued to any non-metallic substrates, as well as to unpainted surfaces. On the latter, it does not hold well, has a low degree of adhesion. Some adhesives additionally contain color indicators that allow you to evaluate on which part of the paintings the product has already been applied. After drying, these dyes lose their color.
Pros and cons
Glue has many advantages. It is completely transparent, and after finishing work on the wallpaper there will be no ugly spots. The product has no unpleasant odor, is harmless to the skin, respiratory organs, can be used in child care facilities. Breeding it is very simple, it practically does not form lumps. Other advantages of glue:
- compatibility with other means, suitability for addition to construction compounds;
- reliability and environmental friendliness;
- lack of need for heat treatment;
- protection against fungus, mold, insect colonization;
- cost effectiveness, low consumption;
- complete swelling without sediment;
- gluing to most types of surfaces;
- the ability to apply in rooms with high humidity.
The remedy has a drawback - it needs to swell for about 2 hours, which is a rather long period for wallpaper glue. But some manufacturers have already eliminated this minus: modern formulations require complete dissolution in 10-15 minutes, although the price of such adhesives will be higher.

How to cook glue - the procedure
All manufacturers describe in detail the method of dilution of the adhesive, so that the user accurately observes the proportions of its dilution with water. The way to create a glue mass is as follows:
- Prepare dishes of sufficient volume (usually a plastic bucket with a lid is used);
- warm water to +25 degrees (room temperature);
- pour water into a bucket, having previously measured, then pour glue in portions;
- mix thoroughly as the rash begins;
- when adding all the glue powder, mix the agent again;
- leave to insist under the lid (for 2 hours).
Typically, manufacturers in the manufacture of the solution indicate such proportions: for 500 g of glue - 8 liters of water. If the canvas is dense, the amount of water is reduced to 7 liters.

Most often, a standard package of 0.5 kg after dilution is enough for 50 square meters. m, that is, about 5 rolls of meter-long wallpaper. Glue needs to be selected in accordance with the type of wallpaper, for heavy ones, it is worth buying a product with the addition of PVA. Care should be taken in water temperature. If it is hot, the glue will “boil”, cold glue may begin to clump. You can use the tool in any room, there are no restrictions.

GOST regulates only the production of the main component of the product - carboxymethyl cellulose. The actions of GOST 30535-97 "Polymer adhesives" and GOST 7698-93 "Starch" do not apply to the production of CMC glue. Actually, KMTs glue is produced in accordance with TU 2231-034-07507908, TU 6-55-40-90 and other technical conditions, which may vary depending on the particular manufacturer.
KMC glue manufacturers
The market presents products of domestic, imported brands. Usually the price of the first is much cheaper, the technical specifications are good. Imported products are more expensive, but also have the best quality. Vimpel, a company based in the Moscow Region, is considered the leader among adhesive manufacturers. CMC is also produced by Carbocel, Omega, Policell, and Malva firms. Clay KMTS “Burny” is produced by the Novokolor company, the product in small packages of 200 g each is Sot-Kombi, and glue for drilling wallpaper based on KMC is the Eklass company. Also in the list of manufacturers of glue are Polyex-Siberia, OTK, Bytkhim.
