Baguettes also perfectly mask small defects in walls and ceilings: differences, roughnesses, roughness. You can use baguettes with any kind of finish: they are perfectly attached to concrete, putty, paint, wallpaper. The advantages of using skirting boards are obvious:

• a large assortment in shape, color, size;
• flexibility, the ability to bypass the roughness of the walls;
• ease and speed of installation;
• low price of most models;
• apply in all interior styles.

Counting the right amount of baguettes is easy. It is necessary to measure the perimeter of the room and divide the figure by the length of one product (usually it is two meters). The result should be rounded and add a couple of skirting boards for an unexpected case, spoilage.

Types of Baguettes

Depending on the material of execution, ceiling skirtings are divided into the following varieties:

1. Foam. Polystyrene (polystyrene) is the cheapest and lightest material. Baguettes from it are attached to glue, putty and hold firmly to the surface. Due to the low moisture resistance, it is not recommended to use them in rooms with high humidity.
2. Polyurethane These are expensive and high-quality baguettes. Polyurethane can be used in any operating conditions, it has a smooth surface, density, it can not be painted.
3. Gypsum. They are characterized by low moisture resistance and can be damaged by physical impact, but they are very beautiful and give the overall picture of the room an expensive look. Most often they are mounted in public places, hotels, restaurants. For rooms with ceilings below 3 meters, the use of gypsum moldings is impractical.
4. Wooden. Lightweight baguettes can be attached to glue, heavier - only on self-tapping screws, screws. Wood products are allowed to be painted, they are resistant to mechanical damage, but are not suitable for the bathroom.
5. PlasticThis type of baguette cannot be painted, but practically does not respond to humidity and can be installed in any room. Mostly plastic skirting boards are used in conjunction with suspended ceilings.

• reliability, good adhesion;
• savings (if putty was purchased for other works);
• environmental friendliness of the composition;
• lack of smell, the ability to apply without airing the room.

The disadvantages of using putty as an adhesive are also there. It is rather inconvenient to apply it with a very thin layer, because the baguette is narrow and long. Before use, each batch of dry mix will have to be bred, and the floor covered. The last point is associated with the difficulties of removing dried material from any surface. With inaccurate application, pieces of putty can bulge out from under the baseboard, so you need to work carefully, without rushing.

Professional adhesives are characterized by high viscosity and a sufficient degree of adhesion, do not spread and can hold heavy types of baguette. They are widely used by experienced craftsmen, as they are easy to use, economical and dry very quickly.

Special adhesives also have disadvantages. Most of them contain solvents, so after sticking baguettes an unpleasant odor will be present, and the room should be regularly ventilated. For fragile, thin polystyrene foam that does not have a polymer coating, such products may not be suitable: they will ruin the inside of the baseboard and dissolve it.

Liquid Nails

This type of glue is perfectly combined with all types of ceiling moldings. The skirtings glued by them can be washed, painted repeatedly, the adhesion quality will not be affected.

For work with ceiling fillets, the following types of liquid nails are used:

1. Neoprene. They are characterized by moisture resistance, therefore, they are recommended for work in wet rooms. The composition contains organic solvents, therefore it is harmful to health until it dries completely and require regular ventilation of the room.
2. Acrylic They are used only in dry rooms, as they are diluted with water and do not contain solvents. They are less resistant to the effects of damaging factors, but are considered environmentally friendly, can be used even in child care facilities.

How to fix baguettes to the ceiling

There are two correct ways to glue ceiling moldings. The first is joining before wallpapering, the second is gluing directly to the surface of the wallpaper.The technology of the work, depending on the chosen method, will be different. In any case, before installing the baguette, you need to wash your hands clean so as not to mess up the snow-white products, and also take care of safety (put on a respirator, provide ventilation of the room).

Surface preparation

If the base is clearly uneven, before gluing the fillets it will have to be leveled with plaster, putty, which is especially important when working with gypsum and wooden skirting boards (they are less flexible). The closest attention is paid to the ceiling and walls in the corners: there all the bumps after joining the baguettes will become most noticeable. Minor defects can be left unchanged, but then it is better to use polyurethane or polystyrene baguettes, which easily hide such defects.

For puttying, a suitable dry building mixture is obtained, a portion is diluted with water according to the instructions. Fill with a mass of recess. To give perfect evenness to the wall, a thin layer of putty is then applied over the entire area. The last layer is done by applying a fine-grained snow-white mixture and leveling the mass with a wide spatula. The ceiling is similarly prepared (at least in the place where the baguette will come in contact with it). If the ceiling is even and painted, its preparation is not required.

It happens that the wallpaper is already pasted, and you only need to change the baguette. In this case, it is necessary to prime the areas that will be glued with a skirting board, to allow the primer to dry. After completing the installation of the skirting board before painting, the part of the wallpaper in contact with it must be covered with masking tape so as not to get dirty.

To lay the LED strip, it is recommended to make markings in advance, ensuring a loose fit of the baguette to the ceiling. Usually draw a line with a pencil 3 cm from the ceiling - the upper border of the baguette will pass along it. There is another option for marking: drive a clove at the right distance, pull a thread, which you can navigate when installing the baseboard.

Baguette preparation

How to glue a polyurethane baguette

• moving further along the perimeter, each time accurately measuring the length of the next part, glue the baseboard around the room.

After mounting the baguette, let the glue dry completely, then putty the joints. Finished seams should be rubbed with fine sandpaper, paint baguettes over the entire length.

Installation of wooden skirting boards

Typically, wooden baguettes are used for interior decoration in classic, eco and country styles. Such products look best with a wooden ceiling. They have a lot of advantages: environmental friendliness, attractiveness, resistance to mechanical damage.Usually, liquid nails are used to attach light baguettes from a tree, and work in this case is carried out similarly to that described above. Heavier products are fixed in another way:

• make a thorough marking of the walls;
• prepare the first baguette - cut it off for a quality fit of the next, measuring the angle in the miter box;
• lubricate the wrong side with liquid nails for convenience;
• apply baguette to the wall;
• firmly holding the product, attach it with self-tapping screws, driving the hats as deep as possible;
• fill the entire perimeter of the room with baguettes;
• close the hats of self-tapping screws with putty on wood, after drying, clean it with emery cloth;
• the joints are also puttyed, treated with sandpaper, varnished in the color of a baguette.

How to fix a PVC skirting board

Most often, such baguettes are used for decorating walls and ceilings with plastic panels in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in the veranda. Often, they even come with panels in the kit, have a special groove inside for mounting, and are installed only when the panels are attached.

First, they mount the frame for plastic trim, the rail of which on the ceiling or wall will become the basis for baguettes. The latter is attached with brackets or self-tapping screws directly to the frame, measured in advance in size and sawed with a hacksaw.

For the design of joints, angles, special connectors are used, which are mounted on glue for reliability. If the installation turned out to be inaccurate, and there are gaps between the skirting boards, they are coated with a transparent or white silicone sealant.

The difference of this technique is that at first the baguettes are glued to the ceiling, then putty, sealant all the seams, gaps, and only then go on to the final wall decoration with wallpaper. To make the wallpaper line perfectly smooth, they are glued with a margin, and then carefully cut with a sharp knife strictly under the baguettes.

Plinth mounting in corner joints

Joining baguettes in the corners is the most difficult stage of work. The overall appearance of the room, especially the ceiling, will depend on the quality of the trimmed products. To cut the skirting boards, you need a miter box, which you should practice in advance on small unnecessary pieces. The skirting board should be placed in the miter box as it will be located on the ceiling, the lower part should be pressed to the side of the tool. Make a cut so that an angle of 45 degrees is obtained. This is true for a room with even right angles (90 degrees). If the angle is not right, it is adjusted to the desired value with a sharp knife manually. You can not allow the appearance of barbs or immediately carefully cut them with a knife.

Glue the fillets in the corners as follows:

• fold the products together, check the accuracy of the joints;
• cut off interfering areas with a knife, if necessary;
• grease the skirting boards with glue, apply them to the wall surface in turn;

Baguette mounting technology

Depending on the type of baseboards, there are a number of nuances that must be taken into account during installation.

Lightweight foam models

If there are fears that the baseboard will not stick between the wall and the surface, and the base has defects, it is recommended to use expanded polystyrene models. They are so simple to use that when gluing on a wallpaper, the base does not require preliminary preparation at all.

Instructions for using light skirting boards:

• mark the wall with a pencil, marking the bottom edge of the fillet;
• take the details, cut them according to the size of the walls;
• for cutting in corners, use a miter box, a sharp knife, a special file for polystyrene;
• in the absence of experience, you can draw the required angle on the cardboard, and then apply it to the end of the product before cutting;
• grease the back of the baguette with glue, let it dry a little;
• attach the part to the wallpaper, aligning it with the drawn line;
• remove excess adhesive immediately with a rag;
• press well, fix the fillet;
• stick all remaining parts.

Heavy polymer products

Sometimes, relief baguettes of gypsum and polyurethane are attached between the wall and the ceiling. It is undesirable to stick them on the wallpaper, because the latter may not withstand such a heavy "burden". Therefore, the order of work will be slightly different:

• cut parts, including angular;
• draw a line on the wall along which the lower edge of the plinth will pass;
• slightly above this line (1-1.5 mm) with a sharp knife cut through the wallpaper to the full thickness;
• if the wallpaper is wound under a stretch ceiling, 0.5 cm below its level also make a cut;
• pry off the cut strip of wallpaper with a spatula, remove it (if necessary, additionally sprinkle the wallpaper with water);
• it is good to clean the wall from the remnants of paper and other contaminants, primer it;
• stick the baseboard in the standard way.

Wooden structures

Wood products are even heavier, so you need to fix them much more reliably. Fragments of the skirting boards are cut with a hacksaw according to the size of the walls, in the corners - by 45 degrees. The ends are sanded with sandpaper so that the joints are neat. Next, make markings according to the width of the plinth around the entire perimeter of the room and drill the details with screws, deeply recessing the hats.

In addition, you can use gluing on liquid nails so that the baguettes are held on the wall and do not change position during drilling. After the baseboards are ground, putty, varnished or painted.

How to glue plaster moldings on the ceiling

The procedure for working with such skirting boards will be similar to the previous options. The only difference is that the gypsum fillets are planted on a thick layer of gypsum-based finishing putty. The remaining mass is removed with a spatula. It is important to trim the corners and ends very evenly, preventing the appearance of chipping, they will greatly spoil the appearance of the finish.

Over time, any skirting boards, even the most expensive ones, may turn yellow. Therefore, they are recommended to be painted to give a more aesthetic appearance, as well as to probably hide all joints and defects.So the baguettes will look beautiful and last longer, without requiring replacement during each repair.
