How to choose paint for decor
In order for the spray to lie well on the surface and create a beautiful long-lasting pattern, buying paint in spray cans, it is necessary to take into account such moments.
Base structure
This can be plaster, wallpaper, metal, concrete or any others. You can buy universal paints suitable for any basis. But it is better to choose according to the characteristics of the material - such a selection will provide higher quality and durability of the picture.

When painting the fence or the facade of the house, you should take a coloring spray that is resistant to weather and UV protection, otherwise the picture will quickly fade and crack, the wall will get an unkempt look. For walls in the bathroom, it is necessary to purchase water-repellent compounds. There are also heat-resistant dyes, with which you can paint the heating radiator or the surface of the stove.

This is especially important when painting large areas. If you do not immediately calculate the required amount of paint for the decor, then it can happen that it will end before the drawing is completed, and you will have to buy the necessary amount. And this is not always convenient, because the store may not have the composition of the desired shade.
Solvent used
To create patterns, depending on the surface and location, decorative paint differs by solvent:
- Water dispersion is the cheapest and easiest to use. Good for artwork on wallpaper or any other surfaces in rooms with normal humidity. Weakly resistant to abrasion after drying the picture - for durability, it is desirable to cover the picture with colorless varnish.
- Latex spray is great for decorating rooms with high humidity or if the wall has to be washed often. It is easy to use and well laid on any surface. The latex base is almost odorless, non-toxic.
- Silicone solution has increased strength and moisture resistance. With it, you can decorate the walls and fences on the street, providing them with long-term beauty and protection.
- Oil paint is not suitable for creating long-lasting patterns, it has poor wear resistance and does not lie well on the surface.
Active components
Spray paints differ in their basis:
- Acrylic has high strength and maintains color brightness for many years. Latex based acrylic compositions are ideal for painting in the kitchen, in the bathroom or on the street. Acrylic Stained Glass Blends allow you to create durable airbrushing on the car.
- Alkyd is rarely used for decoration work, it is poorly suited for work on plastered or concrete surfaces due to the fact that the organic solvents included in its composition are poorly combined with most building and finishing materials. Alkyd sprays are usually used to create paintings on glass or metal.
Appearance
According to the effect obtained:
- Matte, giving an even shade.
- Glossy, shiny and shimmering in the rays of light.
- Metallized, creating the effect of metal when they draw on any basis.
- Chameleons that can change color depending on the lighting.
- Craquelure, creating the effect of antiquity. As a rule, they are available in gold and silver, when applied they create the effect of “cracking.
- Fluorescent, luminous have a wide color palette. In the afternoon, the decor applied with such a spray will look quite usual, but in the dark the pattern will glow. You should not paint exclusively with luminous paints - this will spoil the whole effect of design, it is better to “highlight” individual elements of the picture.
How to use
The work with coloring compounds in cans is simple and convenient, but using them, you need to consider that:
- Organic-based sprays are highly flammable. Do not use them near open flames.
- When spraying the dye, cover the floor and those parts of the surface that will not be decorated. Masking tape can be used on objects or walls to protect against excessive spraying.
- When working, be sure to use a respirator. The smallest particles of suspension can get into the respiratory tract and cause irritation.
Having prepared, thus, a workplace, you can proceed to the decoration:
- The area for drawing is cleared of all pollution. If possible, it is better to rinse it well, let it dry, and then degrease it with White Spirit, acetone, and a solvent.
- If you plan to pre-stain the base, then you need to remove old layers of paint from it, align it with a “skin” and prime it.
- Shake the can with the dye up and down for 5 seconds, thanks to this action the metal balls inside will ensure uniformity of composition.
- Spraying the paint coat should be carried out by holding the spray gun no further than 30 cm from the surface to be painted and at a slight angle to it.
- The paint should be applied crosswise, if during the application of the first layer the hand moved along, then with the next layer transverse movements should be made.
- Small decorated items are best placed horizontally: a similar measure will reduce the likelihood of ugly drips.
- Aerosol paints have a high drying speed. As a rule, after 5-10 minutes it will be possible to apply a second layer or element of the picture.
The simplicity and ease of use of aerosol paints and varnishes help to create a unique room design, make your car unique with airbrushing or decorate a boring facade and fence with graffiti, give new life to your beloved old things and create unique crafts to decorate the interior.
You don’t need to have a lot of artistic talent, just show a little imagination, and the rest can be done using stencils and spray dyes. The compositions should be selected in accordance with the basis and the effect that must be obtained.
