What are mosaic paints
Now stores have a rich assortment of colors, stunning colors and decorativeness. They allow you to independently turn home repairs into an unusual design project.
Mosaic paints were developed by Italian designers in the middle of the twentieth century with the aim of replacing plain wall decoration with a more interesting surface structure interspersed with particles of other colors. They gained popularity very recently - literally in recent decades.
Multicolor paint is the latest finishing material made using advanced technology. The effect of diversity and multi-color is achieved due to the specific structure, including miniature capsules containing the substance of all kinds of shades (there can be from two to several).
The surface coated with it is distinguished by many texture options. With its help, they make an original drawing that resembles natural and synthetic materials (silk, velvet, marble, wood), creating the impression of not dyeing, but finishing with textiles, cork wood, marble chips.

Composition, properties and scope
The paint consists of a tinted or translucent gel-like base with the inclusion of dye grains placed in capsules. They are acrylic based latex polymers. For their manufacture, environmentally friendly synthetic resins penetrate deep into the surface. Due to the shell, the coloring matter does not mix during storage and transportation. The unusual composition of multi-colored capsules makes it possible to realize the most innovative and original ideas of room design.
Components are usually contiguous or polar shades. The size of the inclusions can be from microscopic to very voluminous. During application, the capsule shell is opened, forming colorful marks on an even background surface. The color of the wall looks uneven, shimmers in different shades. The industry now produces many paints of various compositions of the base base and color capsules:
- matte;
- iridescent;
- mother of pearl.
The shape of the capsules also affects the staining result - spots are obtained in the form of:
- classic circles;
- blurry blots;
- raindrops;
- geometric patterns;
- starry sky.
The qualitative composition of mosaic paints allows you to apply them on any type of surface:
- wooden;
- metal;
- brick;
- concrete;
- drywall;
- putty.
Advantages and disadvantages of mosaic paints
The aesthetic advantage of multicolor paints lies in the possibility of creating an attractive three-dimensional relief with a wide variety of color palettes, as well as styling natural and artificial materials. The drawings created by means of mosaic paints imitate:
- velvet fabrics;
- antique marble;
- sea swell;
- Sandy shore;
- starry sky;
- golden wire;
- pearl haze;
- Northern Lights.
Many are attracted by the environmental safety of solvent-free material. Due to this feature, it is used for interior decoration:
- living rooms;
- shops;
- offices;
- cafes and restaurants;
- hospitals and clinics;
- kindergartens and schools.
In addition to the artistic value, multicolor paint is characterized by pragmatic virtues. The layer is resistant to pollution; hardly removed greasy and wine stains can be easily removed from it. Varnishing gives the surface strength and reliability. The paint does not fade over time, does not wear out. It gains anti-vandal qualities, it is not capable of being damaged by pets and children's tricks.
Advantages of multicolor paints:
- lack of pungent odor;
- short drying time;
- environmental Safety;
- easy surface care;
- the ability to mask minor injuries and imperfections;
- preservation of color intensity;
- high level of fire protection;
- moisture resistance.
Note! Due to the lack of a clear pattern with minor damage, part of it is easy to make up without losing the integrity of the pattern.
It is difficult to name products without flaws; multicolor paints also have (a little) them. Their use requires specific materials: a deeply penetrating primer, primers for preliminary surface preparation. For the staining procedure, a large amount of time and well-formed material handling skills are necessary. A condition for high-quality paint application is a temperature of at least +5 degrees. The most important thing is careful handling of the jar before starting work, so that the capsules do not open in the package. In this case, the desired result will not work.

In the assortment of modern finishing materials, mosaic paints are widely represented. Their selection is based on the prevailing characteristics and methods of application.
Tintoflex
This species is available in three colors:
- pastel;
- contrasting;
- monophonic.
They can be combined, obtaining by mixing many unusual shades. The paint enhances the relief of the coating by styling natural materials: sandstone, granite, cork, shell rock.
to contents ↑Tintoflex is applied to any previously prepared surface: plastic, metal, wood, concrete, chipboard, fiberboard, cement. In this case, use a roller, spatula or spray gun. The peculiarity of the paint is an uneven coating, which must be smoothed out after half an hour with light movements, without pressing on it.
Trimcolor
The paint belonging to the budget form is designed for decorating surfaces from almost all materials. Due to its characteristics, it is suitable for painting walls both indoors and outdoors: it can withstand temperature changes from –40 to +50 degrees. Facades are recommended to be varnished additionally. Drying occurs during the day at +20 degrees and above. Before starting work, gently stir without using mechanical devices to prevent damage to the capsules.
to contents ↑Millicolor
Decorative paint of French and Italian production forms an original dot pattern resembling the texture of granite chips. Of the several tones of each color, a lot of patterns are compiled, and as additives, the developers offer silver and gold sequins.The paint, manually mixed before use, is suitable for any surfaces prepared in advance (primed).
to contents ↑Multimix
Mosaic paint is intended for interior decoration. As a result of staining, the surface becomes matte, without shine. It resembles a pleasant fabric to the touch, suitable for any previously prepared surfaces:
- concrete;
- gypsum;
- plasters;
- plastic;
- Chipboard.
to contents ↑Stirring must be careful to avoid damage to the capsules. If necessary, can be diluted with water up to 10%.
Application Technique
For applying multicolor decorative paint, brushes, rollers, spatulas are used, but the best option is special spray guns. The thickness of the coating depends on the desired result. Mosaic paints are easy to use.
Basic requirements and recommendations
Staining with multicolor paints is possible only at a temperature in the range of 10-35 degrees. They do not like the cold and lose their qualities if you work with them at sub-zero temperatures.
Before use, it is advisable to mix the paint with water - about 5%, and this ratio should be maintained throughout the procedure. They interfere carefully, without using high-speed automatic devices that can destroy capsules. Painting is recommended in a ventilated room using a mask. When storing containers with a coloring composition, it is necessary to protect from heat and direct sunlight.

Preparatory Activities
Mosaic paints are undemanding - they are suitable for almost any surface. But it must be prepared:
- to clear from pollution, dust;
- smooth crevices and creases with putty;
- to grind;
- use primer and primer to prevent shedding and bonding of microcracks.
At this point, the surface should dry completely. In the case of using a transparent base, a primer layer (water-based paint) is required.
to contents ↑Preparation of previously painted surfaces
In this case, you must:
- remove the previous layer with a metal brush;
- then treat with a primer solution;
- apply water-based paint;
- after drying, stain with the main paint.
Preparation of porous surfaces
To prepare a brick or drywall, you need to get rid of these pores with primers. To do this, remove dirt, grind with sandpaper, level with adhesive material, paint over with a water emulsion with the addition of color in the color of the final coating.
to contents ↑Preparation of metal bases
The peculiarity of preparing metal surfaces before painting is degreasing and rust removal, sanding with sandpaper, coating with an anti-corrosion agent. In trade, special primers for metal surfaces appeared.
Important! It is advisable to purchase materials of the same brand.
Mosaic application. Application Methods
When the thorough preparation is completed, begin painting. Applying multicolor paint only at first glance seems like a simple job. A professional will cope with it much better than an amateur. Two staining methods are common. Small surfaces are covered by hand, for a large amount of work use a spray gun.
Manual way
Do-it-yourself painting requires a simple paint or thermoplastic plastic roller. If the thick structure of the dye forms an uneven coating layer, after half an hour it is smoothed with a spatula with light movements without pressure. Alignment creates a rectilinear or curly pattern.
The use of a long-nap roller forms relief patterns on the surface, and a short-haired tool forms an imitation of masonry.
to contents ↑Using spray guns
A first-class result is obtained when applying mosaic paint with the help of technical devices facilitating the work:
- spray guns;
- airbrushes;
- pneumatic compressors.
The manual recommends keeping the device at a distance of 40 cm at right angles to the wall. Select a nozzle with a diameter of 2 to 2.5 mm. The pressure should be constant and be 0.2 atm. However, the application technology and the result are modified by changing these parameters. Before painting, surfaces that do not need to be updated should be covered with cellophane or tape.
The paint acquires special strength if applied in 2 layers - vertically and horizontally. It dries in a few hours, and after a day nothing will happen to it.
Mosaic paint combines a comfortable way of updating a room or office with an unconventional appearance. A modern paint and varnish product allows you to realize the most daring ideas of interior modernization, decorating it with natural motifs.
