Characteristics and applications of silver paint

Despite the fact that the construction market is replenished every year with a new assortment of paints and varnishes, the use of silver paint does not lose its popularity and has been used by several generations of masters. What is the secret of such popularity of silverfish? What qualities do such enamels have? Where are they most often used?

Dye composition

Silver enamel is not the kind of paint with silver ions that should protect the floor and walls inside the house from the growth of microbes. There are no ions in this dye. The name silver paint does not owe its name to the content of silver ions in its composition, but to the silver-metallic shade that appears after the mixture dries.

Its main composition is aluminum powder, which varies in size of grinding:

  • PAP-1;
  • PAP-2.

PAP-1 has slightly larger particles, but the quality of painted surfaces with diluted aluminum powder does not depend on the degree of grinding.

Silver powder aluminum

Silver aluminum powder is diluted for coloring with various enamels or varnishes, most often alkyd and acrylic. If desired, paintwork with the addition of ions can be used for breeding - this is well suited for decorating internal walls.

Properties of paints with aluminum

The characteristics of the solutions largely depend on the enamel or varnish used to prepare the composition with aluminum powder. But there are qualities that are inherent in this entire group of coloring compounds:

  1. Creation of a barrier effect (after drying, a thin strong film forms on the surface, which serves as a protection against moisture and other external aggressive influences).
  2. The property of reflecting light. The ability of the material to reflect sunlight and most of the ultraviolet spectrum helps protect industrial and residential buildings from overheating. If the roof and walls of the building are painted with silver, then, due to the property of reflection of sunlight, it is possible to protect buildings from overheating in hot weather.
  3. High protective qualities. The composition with aluminum powder is not susceptible to rust and reliably adheres to the treated surface. Metal products painted with such a mixture acquire anti-corrosion properties.

Additional properties to the above qualities will be the technical characteristics of varnishes or enamels used for the manufacture of a composition for coloring (alkyd, acrylic).

In what form is produced

Serebryanka on sale can be found in such forms:

  1. A powder that must be mixed with a suitable paint composition before use.
  2. Ready mixes, which before use are sufficiently stirred and, if necessary, diluted with a suitable solvent to the desired paint consistency.

Silver paint in a paint bucket

Finished dyes can be sold:

  1. In banks or paint buckets.
  2. In spray cans. The aerosol form of release is very convenient to use and store, because aerosol paints are stored longer, and additional painting equipment is not required when working with them. In aerosol form, acrylic or other water-based dyes are available.

As sales practice shows, most often they acquire powder formulations for the independent manufacture of the necessary mixtures and aerosol cans, often having different tinting for decorating walls or painting small surfaces.

Pros and Cons of Using Silverfish

What makes silver enamel popular for many decades? This is facilitated by the following characteristics of the coloring composition:

  1. Convenience of application. The dye evenly, without sagging, lay down well on the prepared surface. Leaks do not occur even when painting walls, steep slope of the roof or other vertical bases.
  2. Strength. A thin uniform layer of the coloring matter after drying forms a thin film, holds firmly to the base, does not exfoliate.
  3. Universality. Silver painting is most often used to protect metal from rust, but the composition with aluminum can be used on any other basis (wood, stone). For example, painting the wooden walls of the arbor with silver powder, diluted varnish or acrylic-based enamel will prolong the life of the structure for a long time, reliably protecting it from rot and drying out.
  4. Environmental friendliness. Silver powder is non-toxic. The composition can acquire toxic properties only after dilution with toxic enamel. If non-toxic paints and varnishes, for example, acrylic water-dispersion ones, were used to prepare the mixture, then with this dye you can decorate the walls inside the premises.
  5. Aesthetics. The dye after drying has a pleasant metallic shade. If desired, you can not be limited to only one tone, but before painting, tint the mixture in any color you like. It is not difficult to do this, especially since there are various colors for sale, you just have to choose the one that suits the paintwork. Different colors of metallic shades will look unusual when decorating walls outside and inside buildings. And you don’t need to color it yourself - the shops offer a wide range of spray paints (usually acrylic), thanks to which you can create beautiful graffiti on the walls.
  6. Durability. As practice has shown, the silver-painted roof and facade walls do not need to be repaired until 6-7 years. If the surface is constantly in contact with water, then the period of protective properties is reduced to 3 years, and on the walls inside residential premises, beautiful decor can last up to 15 years.

Pros of Using Silverfish

The disadvantages include the fact that the powder for mixing is combustible and even explosive, therefore, it requires proper storage conditions. But these qualities of aluminum powder in no way affect its protective and decorative properties - they are lost after diluting the powder with enamel or varnish and no longer require special storage conditions, except for protection from drying out.

Areas of use

Despite its versatility, silverfish is most often used to create corrosion protection. Often it is used for painting:

  • various metal structures for industrial use (power lines, pipelines);
  • products of the automotive industry: both for tuning a car, and to give its individual parts additional strength;
  • galvanized or metal roofs;
  • hangars and other utility rooms made of metal (not only the roof is painted, but also the walls to protect against overheating in the hot season);
  • structures in constant contact with fresh or sea water.

Silver plating

In addition, silver dye is much less commonly used to protect and decorate buildings made of concrete, stone or wood, and silverware based on acrylic enamel can be used to color plastic products.

How to prepare yourself

If you are planning to make silver paint yourself, you should pay attention to the following:

  1. The nature of the grinding (PAP-1 or PAP-2). The ratios for dilution with paints and varnishes are always indicated on the packaging for aluminum powder, and it is not recommended to violate these proportions.
  2. Method of application to walls: aerosol, using a spray gun or roller. For the aerosol method, the composition should be made more fluid using acrylic or other aqueous varnishes. Acrylic paints and varnishes are not only convenient for spray application - after drying, all acrylic paints provide high protection against adverse effects.
  3. Do not use nitro enamels and oil paints for dilution - they do not mix well with the aluminum base.

DIY silver paint

To obtain a homogeneous mass, mixing should be carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. Measure the required amount of powder and pour into a prepared container.
  2. Add a little paint base and mix until a thick porridge forms.
  3. In the resulting slurry, gradually mixing, add the remaining varnish.

Next, you should evaluate the density and, if necessary, dilute with a solvent suitable for the base: for the aerosol method, it will be larger, and for application with a painting tool, a denser mixture is required.

How to paint

Staining with silver paint, it does not matter, by spraying or using a paint tool, is carried out in the same way as for most dyes:

  1. Surfaces are cleaned from the remnants of the old decor and degreased.
  2. A primer is applied to the cleaned base (one coat is enough for silverfish).
  3. After the soil has dried, paint is applied in several layers.

Easy to use and durable silverfish will protect structures from the aggressive influence of external factors, and its durability will significantly save on repairs, because subsequent repair and restoration work will be required soon.
