No technology has yet been able to fill artificial materials with the energy of heat and home comfort. More and more often a person wants to see something natural, warm, natural around him. For this purpose, it is good to use wooden structures in the interior of the apartment, in particular, lining. The use of modern technologies will help to give its surface high performance characteristics: coating ceilings with varnish with special properties.

Wood as a structural material
Wood is an excellent material for ceiling structures. The following properties speak in favor of its use:
- it has a stunning unique look, its texture as a book stores its entire history, which can be read by a specialist;
- the tree isolates the room well from external noise and cold;
- this material does not cause allergies;
- the room framed by a tree retains its own inherent microclimate, acquires a unique flavor and personality.
The need for varnishing
The wood is characterized by a unique pattern, which is its advantage, and it is undesirable to hide it. The surface of the ceiling is not subjected to dynamic loads, during operation, hard-to-remove dust does not settle on it, it does not scratch, and is not exposed to direct sunlight. All this gives reason to think about whether to coat the ceiling.
On the other hand, in favor of the need for processing the ceiling put forward the following reasons:
- over time, the tree darkens and loses its inherent beauty;
- the treated surface is easier to care for, and the dust and dirt deposited on it are easier to remove;
- wood is sensitive to moisture. Insufficient or excess moisture can cause cracks. The coating creates a protective film on the surface;
- The biggest plus to the treated ceiling is the appearance. That coating can emphasize the texture of the tree.
Materials
The inherent charm of a tree can only be preserved if transparent coatings are used. They are divided into protective and decorative according to the method of exposure to wood:
- protective materials prevent drying, rotting, destruction from insects and fungi, do not leave a mark on the surface;
- decorative coatings, these include paint and varnish, give shine and gloss.
Depending on the base, such coatings are used:
- Acrylic varnish preserves the original color of the wood well. Harmless. For its dilution, esters, alcohol or water are used, which depends on the composition.
- Alkyd varnishes are more expensive, they are applied only to a completely dried surface. Add shine to wood, increase resistance to moisture and damage mechanically. The pungent odor and long drying period (up to two days) limit the use for a wooden ceiling.
- More expensive polyurethane-based coating provides high moisture resistance, protects from sunlight and chemical damage.
- Environmentally friendly water-based varnishes dry quickly, plus - affordable.
Color schemes
Varnish is a clear liquid, not necessarily colorless. Using the color added to the varnish, you can change the general appearance of the room.
Color Matching Tips:
- it is not necessary to apply dark shades in the room for a wooden ceiling - they give a gloomy appearance, make the room look like a den;
- the colors of the ceiling, floor and walls should be combined (they should not contradict each other);
- the bedroom will be more comfortable with colorless varnish; it is better to use strict shades for the cabinet;
- There is a main rule that no one has canceled: light tones expand the space, and dark ones limit it (this should be taken into account when working with varnish).
Application technology
The process of coating with varnish does not cause much difficulty. It is carried out in the following sequence.
- Preparation consists in cleaning the surface from dirt mechanically, with preliminary grinding with sandpaper or a grinding machine. Grinding is carried out only along the fiber line. If a coating has been previously applied, it must be carefully removed. The varnish is remarkably removed by soda. Traces of mold or mildew on the surface are removed using a special bleaching solution.
- They take measures to protect the floor from paint.
- A layer of stain is applied (for tinting), but this is an optional procedure. After processing it, even ordinary wood takes the form of a more expensive breed. A light stain is used for the ceiling so as not to darken the room. Stain emphasizes the structure of the tree and therefore is applied even before the varnish. Subsequent work is begun only after it has completely dried.
Tip: In order to better navigate during the work, the varnish work starts from the window and advances in the direction of the light rays. First, the varnish is applied to the cracks, then the space is processed nearby. During work, make sure that no drops and smudges form.
When working with varnish, the temperature from 15 to 18 ° C is considered optimal. Application can be done with windows open, but drafts should be avoided.
To improve the appearance and obtain a uniform high-quality coating, two layers of varnish are applied. With residual material, you can process the ceiling a third time - this will only improve quality. The second layer is necessarily applied after the first has dried, after 3 hours, the alkyd varnish is dried for at least 8 hours. Between applying layers, the surface is slightly cleaned and dust is removed.
Properly selected materials and high-quality work will immediately give their results: the whole room will be filled with cleanliness, brilliance and comfort, which can only be given by natural wood.
