Properties and scope of varnish
Varnish PF-231 is designed to preserve the natural color of the tree. It forms a high-gloss coating, which has excellent wear resistance, does not respond to short-term exposure to water, household chemicals. On a varnish film there are no persistent stains from fruits, wine, coffee. All these characteristics make Leningrad varnish ideally suited for updating flooring.
PF-231 not only beautifully emphasizes the natural wood structure, but also protects the material from damage. Usually it is used for drawing on a parquet from a natural tree, elements of an interior and a decor, furniture, stairs, doors, frames, plinths. The varnish does not allow chips, scratches, and dents to expand, it does not allow wood to deteriorate in damaged places, because it is these zones that are more prone to destruction from water and the appearance of rot.
to contents ↑You can also use varnish to coat previously painted wood products that already have enamel, oil paint or impregnation with an antiseptic solution. If desired, PF-231 is allowed to be applied even to metal structures, provided they are used inside the house.
The composition and specifications of the varnish
This tool is made on the basis of pentaphthalic resin, as can be seen from its name (PF). Also in the composition are drying accelerators (desiccants), tall oil, fatty acids and solvents. Thus, the varnish is considered acrylic oil, is one-component. Its technical characteristics:
- varnish film - transparent, uniform, without lumps, sediment, impurities;
- mass fraction of solids - 48-52%;
- viscosity on the device VZ-246 - 40-60 s;
- drying time at room temperature to the third degree - 24 hours, at a temperature of +60 degrees - 3 hours;
- gloss degree according to the photoelectric gloss meter - 60%;
- hardness according to the pendulum device (Koenig pendulum) - 0.15 relative units;
- bending film elasticity - 1 mm;
- resistance to static action of water at room temperature - 8 hours
Packing flow and drying
The product is sold in different packages - metal cans of 0.8, 1.8 kg for home use, as well as in containers of 10-50 kg for industrial use and the processing of large areas. Varnish PF-231 is produced by different companies: Tex (under the brand name "Universal"), "Good Master", "Lacra", "Expert", "Shine" and others.
When applying varnish in one layer, the flow rate is 50-70 g per square meter of surface. If you make the layer thicker than 20-25 microns, then the strength of the coating will decrease, it can snap off. The varnish is applied in 2-3 layers, as recommended by the manufacturers. To increase the strength of the film, it is better to cover with it only a polished fine-grained surface.
The drying time of one layer at room temperature is 24 hours, and the complete cure of the entire coating is 72 hours, so an earlier start of operation is unacceptable. When drying, avoid contact with sunlight and drafts on the film - this reduces the adhesion to the base and the service life.
Instructions for use of varnish
In order for the coating to turn out to be really high-quality and beautiful, it must be applied with strict adherence to the recommendations.
Surface preparation
First, all old coatings, which began to crumble, are removed from the base - paint, varnish. When repainting floors, it is important to remove the mastic layer, and cycle the tree, grind. Dust, abrasive residues, and other contaminants must be removed from any base. It is also necessary to get rid of stains of oil, fat, which impair the adhesion of the varnish, which can be done with a solvent. Wax coatings should be wiped off with white spirit. It is recommended to remove coniferous resin with gasoline.
If the floor is made of soft wood, then clings and bumps often appear on it, knots can also initially be present. In this case, it will be necessary to conduct a more thorough preparation of the base with grinding using a grinding machine or coarse emery. After processing with coarse grain, medium is used, at the end - fine for polishing. Corners, joints are processed manually especially high quality.
to contents ↑When there are large chips, pits, irregularities on the surface, they are covered with putty on wood or with a mixture of sawdust with joiner's PVA. Before varnishing, wood should be treated with an antiseptic to prevent the colonization of mold, fungus. Damaged boards are best replaced. When applying the product to the metal, the base must be cleaned of rust, cleaned to a shine. Then the surface is vacuumed, washed and completely dried.
Padding
Before varnishing, the surfaces must be treated with a special varnish primer NTs-222. This primer reduces the absorption of wood by filling the pores, and also has a lot of other positive effects:
- binds prominent essential oils;
- glues protruding villi;
- reduces consumption of the main material;
- accelerates drying time;
- prevents the tree from darkening;
- reduces the risk of color differences.
The NTs-222 tool is applied with a brush along the fibers of the tree. For ordinary wood use one layer of impregnation. Exotic woods, as well as heavy materials, are additionally processed one more time or special cutting soil is used.

The varnish is ready to use, and only with strong thickening it must be diluted with white spirit to make the consistency suitable for work. After shaking or mixing, the parquet lacquer is applied with a brush, roller, spray method, but the first method is preferred. A wide brush with a natural pile is best suited. It is important that the tool is of good quality and does not lose hair when stained.
Start painting the floor from the window toward the door. The steps of the stairs are varnished through one - this is necessary if it is planned to live in the room until the funds completely dry. After the first layer has dried, it is superficially treated with fine sandpaper and a second layer is applied. If possible, increase the temperature in the room compared to room temperature - this will speed up the drying time. It is also desirable to provide good ventilation, because PF-231 contains solvents.

Small areas of varnish peeling can be sanded with fine emery.To maintain a beautiful gloss, it is recommended to treat varnished wood twice a year with special tools.
Cleaning tools from varnish
After the work is completed, the brush, roller, and other used tools are washed in white spirit, solvent, acetone. The brush and roller are first wiped with a dry cloth. It is also possible to carry out processing with sunflower oil to get rid of the remains of varnish.
Storage rules and security measures
PF-231 is stored in tightly closed containers in a cool, dark place, excluding the effects of light, fire, heating devices, electrical equipment. The storage area should not be accessible to children, animals, and not be near food. Shelf life is 1.5 years from the date of release, then the technical characteristics of the paint material begin to deteriorate.
The varnish contains toxic substances, so you need to work with it in a well-ventilated area, wearing a respirator, gloves, glasses. If varnish enters the skin, it should be washed with soapy water, and if it enters the stomach, rinse and seek medical help. You can not breathe the vapor of the composition: they are harmful to health.
