In supermarkets and construction stores, plaster is sold in the form of dry mixes, packaged in bags. Before use, the powder must be diluted with water to the desired consistency.

Most often, liquid silk is used in bedrooms and living rooms, but it is equally well suited for nurseries, offices, corridors, as well as offices, medical and educational institutions.

Types, textures, composition and colors

The basis of the material is silk fibers, which not only provide a unique texture, but also give the mixture plasticity. Acrylic copolymers act as a binding component, which guarantee the strength and elasticity of the coating. Also, the composition of silk plaster includes:

• cellulose, polyester or cotton fibers;

• flakes of water-soluble glue;

2. Long service life. The coating is quite wear-resistant, does not fade, does not lose its beautiful appearance for 10-12 years.
3. Security. The plaster neither during application nor after drying emits toxic components. It does not contain solvents, phenol formaldehyde and other hazardous substances. On the protruding elements, the plaster can be quickly washed away, therefore it is recommended to additionally protect such places with corners. The material dries for a long time after application: final hardening occurs only after 3 days. The price of high-quality plaster can also not be called low, although most manufacturers offer economical options for liquid silk.

The choice of silk plaster

To make the material ideally suited for a particular room, when buying, you need to pay attention to some nuances:

1. Price. A quality blend cannot be too cheap. If the price is low, most likely a lot of cotton or synthetic fibers have been added to the plaster instead of silk.
2. Application Method. Some brands produce mixtures that can only be applied by an automated method (usually they are marked “for professionals”). If you plan to do the decoration yourself, it is better to buy plaster for domestic use.
3. The amount of fiber.This indicator determines the relief of the finished coating. If it has a large relief, then it can easily hide bumps, chips, small defects. Smooth plaster requires a more thorough preparation of the walls, because it will not be able to hide their flaws. It will also fail to complete a drawing, an ornament, if the walls are not perfectly smooth.

When choosing colors, it is worth considering that pastel colors are well suited for the bedroom. In the living room it is permissible to cover the walls with brighter stucco. In the hallway, hall, on the contrary, it is worth using light colors to visually expand the room. To select a specific color, you need to be guided by the shade of furniture and the style of the room.

Wet silk application technology

Before work, you should carefully read the manufacturer's instructions and strictly follow his recommendations in the future. The approximate consumption of material is 1 kilogram per 4-5 square meters, which must be taken into account when calculating the number of packages.

Surface preparation

For reliable fixing of liquid silk, the surface must be carefully treated. Old finishing materials are removed, cracks are closed, pieces of separated rough plaster are removed. “Naked” concrete must be putty, primed, painted white (if the finishing superwhite putty was not used). Gray or other dark cement plaster is painted with at least one layer of white water-based paint. With drywall bases that are prone to absorb moisture, do this:

1. Seams close up, joints between sheets.
2. Fill walls with a moisture-resistant finish.
3. Primed material or painted with white paint with the addition of PVA glue.

Wooden walls also need to be putty, primed to improve traction with liquid silk. Metal elements should be painted with nitro enamel or other metal paint.

Liquid plaster preparation

The plaster is realized in the form of a dry mixture, which must be properly diluted. The actions of the wizard should be as follows:

• Pour water with a temperature of 30–35 degrees into the dishes in the required volume (according to the instructions).
• Pour spangles, other additives into the liquid, if they are attached to this type of product.
• Stir hands, wearing rubber gloves, let stand for 10 minutes.
• Add the main composition in portions, mix until smooth.
• Stand for another 20 minutes, mix again.

Decorative plaster with silk fibers requires a long aging time - up to 12 hours, which is always indicated on the packaging. To speed up the work, it is recommended to immediately prepare 3-4 servings of the composition in different dishes with a certain time interval. So it will be possible to organize a continuous workflow. It is important not to mix the mass with metal tools or a trowel, as this can cause silk fibers to rupture.

Coating

For work, you need to prepare a trowel for rubbing, spatulas of different sizes, rags. After that they act in this way:

1. Take a little mixture with your hand or trowel, press it against the wall.
2. Smooth the lump at the base with a trowel, moving from the middle to the edges to get a coating about 2 mm thick (the tool is held at an angle of 10-15 degrees).
3. In the corners, gently smooth the material with a spatula of the desired size.
4. When flaws appear, the solution is removed and applied again.
5. Leave the coating to dry for 12–72 hours, depending on air humidity and layer thickness.

How to apply velvet plaster

In this case, you need to apply the plaster with short jerky strokes, working up and down or from left to right. Thus, one layer of silk plaster is performed. Then proceed to the formation of the texture: gently pressing the trowel, make elongated strokes. Excess composition is immediately removed, cleaning up in the main container. The finished coating will resemble a velvety fabric that looks very beautiful.

Is it possible to work with a roller?

If desired, the material can be smoothed over the surface of the wall with a roller. However, initially it must still be applied with a trowel. Then use a roller with a short pile. If the strips from the roller do not suit the master, they will have to be additionally ironed out with long strokes.

Creating patterns and patterns

Silk plaster is well suited for the formation of various patterns, compositions, patterns, accent walls or individual sections. To transfer the picture to the wall, you will need a full-size template and an optical device that will help to project the picture onto the wall. A simpler option is to circle the image with a pencil after gluing the template with masking tape.

After drawing the object on the wall, silk plaster of different colors in the right volumes is prepared. The parts of the picture are covered with certain colors according to the idea, the edges and joints are carefully aligned with a narrow spatula. Another option is to finish the area with white plaster, and then apply the pattern on it with acrylic or latex paint, which was pre-tinted.

Coating care

The material practically does not attract dust, is slightly contaminated, and therefore does not need special care. Only every 6-12 months it is recommended to vacuum the walls with a brush head, but very carefully so as not to damage the coating. Do not wash the walls with water or detergents: the plaster deteriorates from contact with liquids.

Repair damaged areas

It happens that some areas of the silk coating are messed up or mechanically damaged. In this case, you can make a partial repair of the finish. The work is carried out as follows:

1. The damage area is marked with a pencil.
2. Wet the selected area with water.
3. After 5-10 minutes, wet plaster is removed with a spatula.
4. Bred a little dry mixture, which was previously used for finishing.
5. Using a trowel, they overwrite the damage, comparing the boundaries with the old coating.

Dismantling and transferring silk finishes

If the silk plaster is tired, it is easy to remove, while it remains suitable for reuse. You just need to sprinkle the walls with water, collect the material with a spatula, dry and put in a plastic bag. If necessary, you can get a lot and put it on the walls again.

Compatibility of decorative silk with old wall covering

The fact that liquid silk lays well on some topcoats reduces the labor costs in preparing walls. These include paint: latex, acrylic, alkyd. If the wall is covered with a finishing putty, you can simply primer it 1-2 times. Such materials are not suitable for facing with plaster:

• wallpaper made of non-woven paper, paper - liquid silk will dissolve wallpaper glue, and the canvas will begin to separate in pieces;
• vinyl wallpaper - the stucco simply will not stick to them;
• panels - this material can be simply painted, and then it will not be necessary to dismantle it;
• varnished wood - you will have to peel off the varnish layer, since it is not compatible with silk plaster;
• ceramic tile - liquid silk does not lie on such a coating.
