Advantages and disadvantages of gluing skirting boards
The skirting board is needed to hide the ugly gap between the wall and floor material. It is he who gives the room a finished look after repair. The choice of installation method for the floor skirting depends on many factors. Among them are the degree of evenness of the walls, the type of plank material.
The installation of wood and plastic products is most easily carried out with liquid nails - quick-setting glue. This type of gasket is universal, it can be used even by beginners.
The advantages of the method are as follows:
- elimination of the risk of mechanical damage to the wall, floor, dents, which is very often observed when drilling;
- reliable fixation of the element in a strictly designated place;
- high installation speed;
- the possibility of using liquid nails even with high humidity in the room;
- profitability of the composition - low price, low consumption;
- elasticity of the seam, the absence of crumbling, complete waterproofness;
- suitability for any materials - from wood, natural stone to artificial.
Such installation technology also has disadvantages. It will not work if the surface of the wall is uneven. The skirting board will look unaesthetic - they will become wavy, quickly move away, water will fall into the holes during floor cleaning. Even the highest quality adhesives will not help to avoid such troubles.
Of course, you can additionally use nails, but the appearance of the room will suffer. It is better to straighten the walls immediately, especially if a wooden plinth will be attached. In addition, the trims can be plastic, MDF, and the latter in properties, fastening technologies do not differ from wooden ones.

Before starting work, it is important to choose a quality adhesive. It is liquid nails that are considered universal, in their absence replacement with glue 88 is allowed. It can also stick most of the known materials, while it is moisture resistant. Among liquid nails, it is worth choosing such as "Tytan", "Moment of Installation", "Antia", "Dragon", "Crassus", "Master Klein" in cylinders. Also, ProfiMaster, which is sold in banks of 1-3 kg, has established itself well.
In order to glue the skirting board with the floor and wall, you will need a number of tools:
- roulette;
- nozzle-gun for liquid nails in a cylinder;
- hacksaw;
- hammer;
- rubber spatula;
- knife.
To facilitate the task of inserting fillets in the corners, you can purchase a miter box, but this is not necessary. It can be replaced with a self-made template, according to which marking is applied. There are self-adhesive fillets, it is even easier to mount them, the process takes a minimum of time.
Is it possible to replace the baseboard without damaging the wallpaper? Yes, fixing it between the floor and the wall is possible without harm to the decoration of the walls. If it is planned to re-stick the wallpaper in the near future, it is better to postpone fixing the baseboard.Otherwise, you will have to tear it off, which can permanently ruin it (this is especially true for wooden products).
For preparation, you should completely clean the area of the junction of the wall and floor, remove dust and other contaminants. Skirting boards measure out, make notes in accordance with the length of the walls. Be sure to take into account the protrusions, angles, otherwise there will be big problems during the installation process.
to contents ↑Wooden baseboards
Now wooden products use much less plastic ones. It is desirable that the material be the same as the floor - natural skirting boards on the floor from the same type of wood look perfect. If desired, they can be laid on a board, laminate, linoleum. After purchasing glue and tools, the skirting board should be cut correctly. A hacksaw is suitable for this purpose. Do this immediately after measuring the length of the walls of the room.
Skirting boards are cut into strips of the right size. When external or internal corner joints are cut, it must be done at an angle of 45 degrees. First cut off from the first piece, then join it with a neighboring one. Holding the hand, cut out the edge so that when a corner is formed, a gap does not appear.
Then you can begin to consolidate:
- take one piece, turn it over to you with the side that will be in contact with the wall and floor;
- apply glue dropwise at a distance of 3-5 cm from each other, this applies to small elements in width;
- the wider ones are coated with the adhesive composition in waves, without separation, this will make the adhesion sufficiently reliable;
- if indicated in the instructions, it is necessary to wait a certain time for “weathering” the glue, but this is not always required, more often liquid nails allow you to immediately lean the product to the surface;
- Direct bonding should start from any angle, best of all from the side of the largest wall;
- you need to glue it carefully on the wall, it is advisable to do it right exactly, especially in height - otherwise glue stains will remain on the wallpaper;
- press the baseboard, hold it for a few seconds (as indicated by the manufacturer), this will speed up the fixation;
- usually after 10-15 minutes it sits tight, the composition dries up;
- then repeat installation for the remaining parts around the perimeter.
It happens that a little glue gets on the front side of wooden products. Liquid nails after hardening are poorly cleaned, therefore they must be removed immediately with a wet rag. It is also possible to scrape off the compound with a rubber or other rigid spatula. With the same tool, glue is taken at the end of the work and the joints are filled with it.
to contents ↑Plastic baseboards
Plastic skirting boards have to be glued much more often; they are popular decorative elements in apartments and houses. Products are very functional, in most of them you can hide the cable or even bundles of wires. There are such types of skirting boards:
- universal - for laminate, wood, tile, linoleum;
- under the carpet (they are l-shaped, press the coating tightly, preventing it from sliding).
Plastic skirting boards come in different stiffnesses. Foamed PVC is not too durable, breaks quickly. Even less reliable hollow from the same material. Semi-rigid PVC products are more flexible, they are sold as a tape in a roll.
You need to fix skirting boards of any kind according to one technology. From the installation of wooden elements, it is somewhat different. Before gluing, it is necessary to carefully measure the length by applying skirting boards to the floor, mark it. They do this taking into account decorative fastening elements (joints), which must be immediately installed on the baseboard. Do the same with corners - they are immediately pushed onto the bar.
You can attach plastic parts to the floor like this:
- glue is dripped onto very thin, narrow pieces every 10 cm;
- with a short length of the baseboard there are enough gaps of 4 cm, in the presence of protrusions, complex transitions - 1-2 cm;
- wide or thick glue is applied in waves;
- joints and corners must be missed - with mechanical action, they come off first;
- when the baseboard is made up of two parts and the latch, only the main part is treated with glue.
to contents ↑It is important that the wall and floor at the glued place are clean, dirt impairs adhesion. Start work from the corner, continue until the end of pasting the whole room.Finally, wipe the baseboard with a wet sponge to remove all traces of the adhesive.
Self-adhesive baseboard
This type of skirting board appeared on the market of construction products recently, but has already gained popularity. It is intended for beginners in the field of repair, for those who wish to save time on flooring. Even smooth walls are not needed for its installation; it can be mounted along moderate “waves” of the surface. This type of finish looks best with linoleum and laminate.
Distinctive qualities of a self-adhesive baseboard are:
- base material - aluminum or polyvinyl chloride;
- can be used in offices, apartments, houses, it is better to use in large rooms;
- installation is very simple;
- all kinds of colors, there are materials for different types of wood, natural stone;
- the cost is low, repairs will be budget.
Thanks to bending, the skirting board can be glued in any, even hard-to-reach place. Its individual parts are fastened with conventional connecting elements. Some manufacturers produce products that require additional fastening with masking tape. Others have a protected adhesive strip on the back. It is necessary to glue immediately precisely, it is problematic to separate them from the wall.
The procedure is as follows:
- clean the surface well, remove dust, dirt, if necessary, degrease with alcohol;
- make markings of the location of the skirting boards;
- remove protection from a small area;
- press against the wall, smooth by hand, immediately adjusting the position relative to the floor and wall;
- continue installation, gradually tearing off the protective tape, pressing the strip;
- at the end of work, trim the material;
- some skirting boards do not even require corner joints, they are easily bent.
After pasting the room with such a baseboard, you can wash the floor in the usual way. There is a strong protective film on the surface of the product. The service life of the products is long, with partial disconnection, problem areas can be glued with liquid nails.
