So that your house does not look like any other, its facade can be originally decorated. For this, various materials are used: siding, decorative plaster, decorative stone and brick, all kinds of paint and varnish mixes and so on. Painting a house outside is a frequently chosen method of decoration. In this case, it does not matter much from which materials the building frame is erected. The modern market for paint and varnish products offers a wide range of products for every need.
The plastered walls of frame houses are traditionally painted (for example, a panel house from SIW blocks). Painting exterior work on wood, brick, stone are no exception. When choosing the appropriate materials, it is important to think not only about the decorative attractiveness of the walls of the house outside, but also about the quality of protection and the durability of the finish.
to contents ↑The choice of paint for the type of base
Which of the stages of the preparatory work is more important: the choice of paint, and then the assessment of the type of base, or vice versa? It seems to us that one without the other is simply impossible. After all, if you buy some kind of paint mixture without taking into account the characteristics of the materials, then you can greatly miscalculate. If the surface and the paint "do not interact", then there can be no talk of any high-quality finish. Most likely, first you need to evaluate the volume and quality of work, and only then go shopping.
So, under a concrete wall you need to buy paint that “will not pull” alkali from the cement mortar. Otherwise, the foundation will simply crumble, collapse. Acrylic-based facade paints are most resistant to alkalis.
But the wall of mineral materials can be successfully painted with vapor-permeable ("breathable"), but at the same time waterproof paint. Silicone paint mixes do an excellent job of this.
Recently, often on the construction site you will find constructions of SIP panels. The building material is a sandwich of two OSB chipboards and a polystyrene foam interlayer. The construction of such blocks is built quite quickly, but at the same time it is not heavy. The material has excellent sound and thermal insulation performance. Subsequently, the house of SIP blocks can be finished with various modern materials, including paint the facade on plaster.
To frame a house from SIP panels, plastering from the outside is easier than simple, since SIP systems have good compatibility with plaster materials. SIP base is very stable and interacts well with the finishing materials applied to it.
Three steps are required here:
- reinforcing mesh;
- primer;
- finishing plastering.
You can safely use a cement-based mortar. If desired, the working mixture can be tinted immediately or painted after drying. By the way, along with other popular types of decoration of houses outside, only plastering guarantees at the same time vapor permeability and tightness. We have described in more detail how to paint a cement mortar.
to contents ↑Types of facade paint mixes
A brick wall can be successfully painted with an acrylic latex mixture. The material has excellent characteristics:
- fire safety;
- breathability;
- increased adhesive properties;
- moisture resistance;
- reliable protection of walls from external (atmospheric) effects;
- easy application;
- quick drying;
- decorative appeal.
A significant disadvantage, however, is the low resistance to mechanical stress (tendency to abrasion).
The most popular in the wound of paint and varnish products are water-dispersed facade mixtures. They differ in composition, and, accordingly, in properties. Acrylic dispersions have been and remain economically attractive. High-quality exterior finish can stand for more than 10 years without re-staining (although there are cases of longer periods).
To paint a house with polyvinyl acetate water-dispersion paint will be relatively inexpensive. But such a finish in humid climates will not last long, because PVA paints are not waterproof.
Butadiene-styrene water-dispersion paints also received some negative reviews regarding performance. A significant minus is photosensitivity.
A plastered panel house made of self-supporting insulated concrete blocks can be freely painted with cement paint. It will come out inexpensively. In addition, the material is resistant to moisture. But there are also disadvantages to such mixtures, for example, the appearance of mold.
Lime paints have antifungal properties, breathable, but, unfortunately, quickly fade and wash off. Silicate-based paints are resistant to UV and moisture. Relate to the "breathable" finishing materials. The average service life of such a facade finish is up to 20 years. But this paint is inelastic, so that with thermal expansion the panel house along the decorative layer can go cracked.
We already mentioned silicone paints for work outside the house. The material has earned the most positive reviews, as:
- moisture resistant;
- vapor permeable;
- provides excellent adhesion to the base;
- does not fade in the sun;
- resistant to fluctuations in ambient temperature;
- antistatic.
Only small nuances overshadowed such an attractive picture: the high cost of the material and the average indicators of wear resistance (and, therefore, durability).
to contents ↑Painting technology
Paints need to be bought in sufficient quantities and even a little more. The calculation of the consumption of materials is determined according to the scheme: the total area of the walls outside for painting, multiplied by the average consumption of the selected paint (ml / m2). All this should be multiplied by the number of layers (at least two).
The consumption of finishing materials will be reduced if the paint is applied on a primer. Also, the flow rate directly depends on the viscosity (density) of the substance.
Any type of substrate should be properly prepared for staining. The stone-brick surface should be cleaned of efflorescence, washed from dust, dirt, stains, mold, limescale. For this, both soap and water solutions and special cleaning agents are used.
It is recommended to putty cracks and other defects, and then clean them with sandpaper. Before painting, a primer is applied in two layers, after complete drying, which can be painted.
The freshly plastered panel house from SIW blocks is already ready for painting (do not forget to primer). But the old plaster should be “tapped”, remove the exfoliated fragments, repair the joints, cracks and other flaws. Be sure to clean from dust and dirt.
Then we paint it like this: on lime plaster - with lime paint, on cement - cement, acrylic paint - on a coating based on synthetic resins. Silicone and silicate paints are best used in conjunction with a suitable primer.
The maximum drying time for one coat of paint is one day. Subsequent layers can be applied without waiting for the final drying of the previous one. Information on the stages of painting is usually indicated on the product packaging.
The work uses: a wide paint brush, a roller with a pile or a spray. The mixture is rubbed horizontally and vertically. In order to avoid the formation of stains, it is recommended not to take long breaks during the period of painting one wall.
If each stage of the facade decoration is professionally approached, then the result will pay off. If you are not sure that you can cope with the assessment and implementation of the work yourself, attract construction specialists. Qualified assistance will never be superfluous, especially in such a specific case. After all, the appearance of the house is practically the face of its owner.
