So that the fur coat or hat does not look shabby, you need to learn how to dye the fur at home, and use one of the methods.
to contents ↑Varieties of fur
Any fur looks presentable, especially expensive varieties: mink, sable, marten. Each type of material has its own characteristics, depending on which it is necessary to produce staining: this will help to obtain the highest quality result.
The easiest way to paint the skin of a rabbit, arctic fox, chinchilla is white. It is not necessary to lighten such a fur before the main stage, it has a basic shade that perceives any dyes. White skins can easily be painted red or other unusual shades: blue, pink. Caution should be observed only with rabbit fur, which reacts sharply to aggressive chemicals, easily deteriorates.
Arctic fox is very dense, therefore, certain difficulties may also arise with painting. Each wool fits snugly against the previous one, there are much more of them on one square centimeter than on a rabbit's skin. Paint on such material will take a lot, with poor-quality staining, light streaks and spots will appear. But the result on the fox remains for a long time, because the paint almost does not fade.
Mink is less susceptible to repainting, especially if it is black: the material does not absorb the dye well, sometimes it is necessary to carry out the procedure 2-3 times. Beaver fur does not lighten or the shade will be uneven, with ugly yellow glades. The fur of a water rat (muskrat) can even become pinkish with white bald spots, and the paint burns out literally in half a season, and the work has to be repeated.
to contents ↑Artificial material is much cheaper, less susceptible to adverse external influences, although it can also deteriorate and become worn. You can also paint it, but not every tool will do. If the paint is not correctly selected, hairs will come out, the material will shed heavily without the possibility of restoration.
Where to start painting
Before starting work, you must carefully inspect the product. If there are traces of moth vital activity, other mechanical damage, “bald patches” on it, staining will not save the situation. It is better to take the thing in the studio, where she can give a second life. The fur needs to be combed, to clean garbage, dust, all contaminants so that the paint is light as even as possible. Next, you should choose the appropriate version of the tool for working with fur products.
to contents ↑How you can dye the fur: artificial and natural
Experts advise using professional compounds designed for dyeing fur skins for this purpose. Such remedies are especially recommended if the hairs are thick, long. You can use hair dye, but you will have to buy several packs, which can be quite expensive. There is an option to cover fur products with aerosol suede paint, which is sold in hardware, shoe stores. Such a tool is able to refresh only the ends of the fur. Paint over the entire thickness of the aerosol is not possible. For proper coloring, you will have to buy special equipment or hair dye.
Before work, you need to test for the degree of aggressive effect of paint:
- dilute a small amount of the product (if it is powder);
- lubricate the material in an inconspicuous area;
- to withstand the time specified by the instruction;
- wash off the paint;
- evaluate the condition of the material;
- proceed to full staining, if the fur retained quality, did not change its structure within 2 days.
to contents ↑When you want to make the fur 1-3 tones lighter, you can use not paint, but brightener. Most often used means "Supra", "Blonde" based on ammonia. Artificial products are best to be painted only with specialized compounds with a note about this possibility. Hair dye will immediately spoil this material, so it’s not worth the risk.
Dyeing for curls
In its structure, fur resembles human hair, so its color can be completely changed by a means familiar to every woman - hair dye. Such products are sold in any supermarket, household chemical goods store, and the choice of prices and shades is very diverse. When buying, you should consider the following mandatory paint requirements:
- resistance (usually acquire funds that can paint over gray hair);
- the tone is at least one shade darker than the color of the hairs;
- sparing composition, lack of caustic substances.
If you want to lighten a dark material, you will first have to discolor it with the appropriate paint. Next, re-staining is carried out in the desired shade. It happens that white fur from yellow socks turns yellow. It will also have to be discolored before staining, otherwise yellowness will distort the selected shade. For fox fur, you need to purchase more paint than for mink, rabbit. A long coat may require up to 5-6 packs of paint.

Spray for dyeing fur
If the tips of the thick fur are burnt out in the sun, it is not necessary to fully stain it. Sometimes it’s enough just to paint the bleached part, and the thing will shine like a new one. To update the fur, you need to purchase a spray for suede in a bottle, but you should not save on its quality. A low-quality product can stain hands, things, and human skin for a long time.
Using spray paint is very simple. You need to hang a fur product on a hanger on a balcony, terrace or close all surrounding surfaces with cellophane. After spraying paint from a distance of 40-50 cm, working through each area. After finishing work, you need to comb the fur, let it dry well. For drying it is permissible to use a hairdryer. Usually the result is enough for one season, then the thing will need to be painted again.
to contents ↑Selection of shades for different colors of fur
Staining without prior bleaching should always be carried out in tone darker than the original. For example, to upgrade classic brown mink fur, you need to buy dark brown dye. If the fur is new, it was not in the sock, it did not burn out at all, it will be difficult to dye it, since the pigments do not fit well on such material. You will have to add not only more funds, but also take a darker shade.It is not difficult to do this: you need to pour a little black into the brown paint.
to contents ↑Gray and blue mink are usually dyed in the same color, choosing the appropriate tone for the hair. The material will not change the shade, but it will become brighter, more saturated. Long-haired fur should also be dyed in a tone close to natural, because for high-quality coloring of hairs you will have to make a lot of effort and buy several packages of the product.
What is necessary for work
Before starting the process, you need to prepare water, hair dye or a specialized product, a preparation for bleaching (if necessary). Also, to wash the fur you will need soda, ammonia, salt, a mild detergent.
Stages of dyeing fur
To get a good, long-lasting result, you must consistently follow all the steps and do the work carefully.
Preparation of the product for coloring
During wear, the thing became very dirty, began to shine, and particles of fat settled on it. It is impossible to wash fur products in the usual way: in a typewriter they will immediately deteriorate. Therefore, for cleaning and subsequent uniform laying of the paint, it is necessary to perform a special treatment with an alkaline solution.
Fur cleaning
To clean the material you need to prepare a solution of:
- 2 liters of water;
- 2 tablespoons of soda;
- 2 tablespoons of salt;
- a tablespoon of detergent for dishes;
- 3 drops of ammonia.
All components must be diluted with water, shake the solution well. Hang the product on a hanger. Grease the mesodrum (skin) with glycerin, previously tearing the lining. This step can be skipped if you can not wet the skin. Otherwise, it may crack or decrease in size after drying.
Comb the fur, with a clean sponge, treat with the prepared product. Thick wool should be moistened with a brush, evenly distributing the liquid on the surface and gently grabbing the undercoat. After 10 minutes, rinse the solution with clean water, being careful not to wet the skin. Then dry the product well in the open air, in a ventilated area. Hang it from the battery, the oven can’t be!
In addition to this recipe, there are a number of tools that are suitable for cleansing fur:
- equal parts of 4% vinegar, water, alcohol;
- shampoo solution for animals;
- professional cleansing spray (Furasol or other).
Dyeing
First, make a trial coloring, so as not to spoil the whole thing with a coloring substance. Usually a drop of the product is applied to the inside of the pocket, the bending of the sleeve, after which the result is evaluated. Next, you can begin to fully dye the fur. Apply the composition with a brush, preferably a special hairdresser. Each area is stained evenly so that there are no clean areas. After 20-30 minutes, the product is washed off with warm water.
to contents ↑Color fusing
To fix the color, a solution is prepared: 5 tablespoons of vinegar (9%) are diluted in two liters of water. After the product, the fur product is sprayed. If dyeing was carried out with hair dye, the supplied balm can be applied to the fur. This will make the product incredibly soft, silk. The balm is applied both to the hair, washed off after 5 minutes, and only then the pigment is fixed with vinegar.
Drying
When all work is completed, the fur needs to be dried. To do this, the thing is placed on a strong wide shoulders, which should fit well in size. It is advisable not to take metal coat hanger (wooden ones are ideal). The product must be brought into a warm room, but placed away from heating appliances, and allowed to dry. Before drying completely, you can put a little glycerin on the fur and comb, setting the desired direction for the pile. Drying usually takes 2-5 days, depending on the type of fur and the size of the product.
to contents ↑Fur care after dyeing
Over time, the hairs of the old fur can become stiff, tarnish even after painting. To fix the problem, you can periodically rinse the product with a hair balm. It is better to take the product that comes with the paint (you can buy inexpensive paint and remove the balm). It will also give shine by spraying things with a solution of vinegar 9% (spoon on a glass of water). The effect of painting in any case will be temporary. Once a season, it’s worth tinting a thing so that it does not lose its gloss and always looks attractive!
