Four ways to quickly and efficiently paint vinyl wallpapers

An inexpensive and relatively inexpensive way to change the interior is to paint vinyl wallpaper. It allows you to change the shade of the walls, make them colorful or tinted, even apply a picture. But in order for your room to get the right color, you should adhere to a number of rules, you will have to apply some tricks.

Types of vinyl wallpaper and the possibility of painting

For successful painting of vinyl, first of all, you need to make sure that this type of wallpaper can be painted. Vinyl wallpapers have two layers, so they are more stable than ordinary ones. Manufacturers produce them in three types:

  1. Kitchen consists of two layers of vinyl, they are durable, moisture resistant, easy to clean, and often have a relief appearance (under a tile, tile). They are glued in the kitchen or in the bathroom. Such wallpaper can be painted, but do it infrequently.
  2. Foamed vinyl basically has the same vinyl, and the top layer is made of spray-coated PVC. It is soft, embossed, suitable for uneven walls. This type of wallpaper can withstand painting well, it can be painted up to 10 times (but usually 5-8).
  3. Flat vinyls have a traditional lower vinyl layer and a thin upper one, here other materials are added to the polyvinyl chloride (most often silk fibers). This wallpaper has a textured, bright, shallow and beautiful surface. Their coloring is possible, but will lead to a smoothing of the picture.

There are options for vinyl wallpaper on a non-woven basis, which can also be painted.

If you paint simple paper wallpapers, then they can get wet, simply tear. Some vinyls also have a paper base, so if you plan to paint the wallpaper, then buying them, pay attention to the inscription "For painting." If it is not, it is better not to risk it.

Typically, wallpaper for painting is completely white or have soft pastel colors - so they will look better after painting color. Such material, in comparison with analogues, costs less, because painting non-woven wallpaper with your own hands will require paint costs. Typically, these rolls are wide, with a sticker there will be fewer joints, but gluing them is more difficult.

Staining methods

So, we choose the method of staining non-woven fabrics. The most famous four - consider each of them.

Before sticking

With this method, ribbons of chopped wallpaper are painted before the sticker. First, measure the tape from the roll and cut it off, then it is painted and only after 1 hour is glued to the wall. This method will allow you to get a beautiful foundation and a convex pattern in a lighter tone. The inner foamed side of the wallpaper absorbs paint better, and the bulges will be painted more. You will get a picture on a lighter basis.

After sticking

With this method, the strips are glued and allowed to dry completely, and only then (not earlier than after 3 days) they are painted. This method allows you to get a flat surface. If you use a stencil on the wall (they are sold in construction stores), then you can apply the original drawing. For a smaller drawing, a stencil on a roller is used.

Wiped

With this method, the wallpaper is painted, as in the second embodiment, and then wiped with a dry cloth. So the picture on the canvas will be lighter. Here they use the feature of foamed PVC to be more slowly permeated with paint from the front than the base. For such work two are required: one paints, the other wipes. The process is time consuming.

Selective drawing

Here, first, the main paint is applied, and then, using a brush and a different color, the pattern on the canvas is highlighted. This is a complex and lengthy process, but it is within the reach of creative people.

Features of the choice of paint

If you have decided on the type of painting, go to the choice of the main thing - the paint itself. First you need to choose the type of paint. It should be water-based - not oily. Paint for vinyl wallpaper is acrylic (best), latex, dispersion or water based. Masters prefer acrylic on a latex basis. It is important its resistance to sunlight, detergents, burnout, as well as its strength, environmental friendliness and speed of drying.

Latex matte paint for vinyl wallpaper

Today in construction supermarkets you can find a special paint for wallpaper. It can be immediately with the desired color, but white is more common, dye (color) is added to it.

There are three main surface options:

  • gloss (half gloss);
  • matte (semi-matt);
  • atlas.

If you need to paint a small or dark room, then it is better to choose the option with a glossy surface, but be prepared for the fact that the smallest dirt will appear on it. Matte paint is suitable for large rooms, it is not so whimsical to stains and touches. Use half gloss in the kitchen, and satin surfaces look great everywhere.

Preparation for work

Before painting non-woven wallpaper, you need to choose the right paint. Calculate its amount, dilute the desired volume immediately. This will allow you to get a uniform color throughout the room, especially if you use color.

Try a small amount of paint on the wall to see what kind of shade you get. Please note that the final color will appear only after complete drying (after 3 days).

Buy and prepare materials, tools, so as not to spoil all the work. For painting you will need:

  • paint and container for work;
  • roller (velor, sheepskin) or spray gun;
  • paint tray;
  • brush;
  • soft rag (several pieces - if you chose the option with wiping);
  • masking tape;
  • floor protection material (film, newspapers, paper);
  • protective equipment: gloves, glasses.

Wallpaper painting tools

If painting is carried out before pasting, it is important to prepare the walls for wallpapering. Clean them from the old coating, repair cracks and other damage, smooth the walls - do this work before painting the wallpaper so as not to stain already painted canvases.

Before painting vinyl wallpapers already pasted on the walls, be sure to clean them of dust and dirt. After cleaning, degrease, wipe the sheets with a soft cotton cloth dampened with dishwashing detergent. Proceed with staining only after the panel has completely dried.

Basic rules for staining

Start painting only when the canvases are completely dry. Paint on water will wet the wallpaper again, make it heavy, do not complicate your work. It can also damage the pattern or even the entire canvas.

The order is as follows:

  1. Before starting work, mask the joints of the wallpaper with doorways and baseboards with masking tape. Cover the floor with a protective film. All materials and tools should be close at hand.
  2. Dilute such an amount of paint that is enough for the entire amount of work, otherwise your walls will have a different shade.
  3. Paint the ceiling first and only then start painting the walls.
  4. Start painting the walls below, move up.
  5. If the work is carried out with a roller, then do not use foam rubber - it can ruin the texture. Those places where the roller does not reach, paint over with a brush.
  6. First paint in 2 layers. Paint the wallpaper once, let it dry for 1 hour, and then repeat the painting.

The basic rules for painting vinyl wallpaper

The paint should be of medium density. Thick paint will clog the relief of the pattern, which will lead to a decrease in the possible number of stains.

Color can only be appreciated after complete drying. Gloss will appear in 3 days.

When asked whether it is possible to paint vinyl wallpapers on a paper basis, the answer will be this: you can try, but it’s better not to. Even if they have been pasted for a long time, have a very dense structure, they can become sour, lose the pattern, peel off, swell or tear.

A few little secrets

Wizards give beginners useful tips to help make your home aesthetic:

  1. If possible, try to color the non-woven wallpaper with a spray gun. This will make the painting even and allow them to be painted more times (up to 8).
  2. Starting to stain, get to work in places behind furniture. This will help to hide flaws that have occurred due to inexperience.
  3. Wallpaper for painting on the ceiling, choose only wide. It is necessary to paint ceiling paintings 2 times.
  4. Remember, you can only paint non-woven wallpaper for painting: foamed vinyl or kitchen wallpaper.

Advantages and disadvantages of painting wallpaper

If the manufacturer himself wrote “For painting” on the label, this suggests that painting is not only possible, but also completely harmless. Indeed, the ability to color the wallpaper provides a number of advantages:

  1. You can change the interior of the room without spending too much on it.
  2. This will be done quickly and with low labor costs.
  3. There is an opportunity to change the interior more often than when re-gluing wallpapers.
  4. Provides ample scope for creativity and imagination.

However, among all these possibilities there are a number of problems, and the main one is that wallpaper does not “breathe” under the paint. This leads to stagnation of moisture and the formation of fungus. Therefore, gluing such wallpaper is not recommended in bedrooms and children's rooms. To fix the problem, you should buy special glue for the wallpaper sticker.

Painting vinyl wallpapers is easy. It does not take much time, does not require large material costs. However, you need to remember that only those types of wallpaper that have a dense top layer are painted: for the kitchen or with foamed PVC. Paper-based wallpapers can go bad: flake, tear, or even fall off. Also silk-screen printing (chintz) is not painted, since after painting it loses its originally embossed appearance.
