Pros and cons of wood processing used oil

Structures and buildings made of wood more than other materials are exposed to the negative effects of sunlight, rainfall and other weather conditions. To prevent the destruction of wood, these parts must be protected using special means for processing wood. One such means that performs a protective and water-repellent function is machine waste oil. Waste engine oil treatment is a unique tool that helps protect the tree from rotting, mold and other unpleasant problems that destroy the board.

Woodworking requires caution and study of the ultimate goal, the thoughtfulness of how the wooden structure should turn out in the end. If you want to change the color of the wood, for which various means of protection or painting are used, such work with wood requires a different approach if you process it indoors or outdoors.

For working with wood, there are many different materials that can protect wooden parts, paint them or varnish.

Used oil

For wood processing are used:

  • copper sulfate;
  • sunflower oil with natural propolis;
  • Finnish composition, including flour, iron sulphate, table salt, lime and water;
  • birch tar treatment;
  • hot bitumen or tar;
  • machine oil;
  • synthetic products.

Impregnation (determination of the desired material) for a wooden structure or part is selected based on the type of wood, its purpose in the construction, or the final color option.

Features of processing with engine oil

Waste oil wood processing is one of the most common ways to cover and protect wood. As the main material, ordinary engine oil is used, which has served its purpose in a car.

Brush oil on wood

Benefits of using engine oil:

  • low cost of material or its availability;
  • protection of wood from moisture, rodents, insects, mold and damage;
  • reliability;
  • preservation of the hardness of the material.

Despite the important advantages of use, the treatment of wooden structures with waste oil has a negative impact on humans, and has serious disadvantages:

  • wood processing with machine oil is used exclusively in non-residential buildings;
  • small parts of structures located close to the ground or hidden elements are processed by mining;
  • poor appearance and loss of color of wood;
  • this material is an easily flammable agent;
  • coated parts are difficult to paint;
  • attention should be paid to the choice of the oil substance and its composition, as some of them contain a large number of negative destructive substances, giving preference to oils with mineral properties.

Note! If people will often be in contact with the painted structure, it makes sense to abandon working out in favor of traditional antiseptic compounds for wood.

The use of machine waste oils

The use of mining as a coating for wood is widely welcomed in rural areas. Used engine fluid covers hangars, garages, sheds, warehouses, attics and fences. Boards and wooden cuts that were already exposed to negative destructive factors, when coated with used oil, are also protected from subsequent destruction and decay of the wood.

Putting it on logs

When covering a building or fence, one should take into account the color change of the structure, the tree loses its natural color, which is not subject to further correction. To avoid an unpleasant shade of wood, it is recommended to apply an oil solution to the lower part of the fence or structure, and paint the upper part with a substance that preserves the aesthetic appearance of the wood.

Small parts, ends, walls, undersides of the walls are also treated with a machine solution, which contributes to their longevity and high-quality processing in an inexpensive way. One of the main structures, which is most often covered by machine waste, is a fence. Contacting directly with the ground, the wooden fence is subject to moisture and decay, with the help of oil working out the hedge acquires additional protection against moisture and damage.

For such constructions, it is recommended to use oils for cars - these types of oils are easily weathered, getting rid of an unpleasant pungent odor and negative destructive properties.

In addition to structures made of wood and planks, oil impregnation can also be used for metal parts and concrete products, which prevents the appearance of rust and mold, protecting structures from destruction.

Machine oil staining

To work with wood, you need to prepare all the necessary tools and parts:

  1. Prepare the oil, or drain all the remaining oil in one container and mix thoroughly to obtain a composition that is uniform in color and consistency.
  2. Oil painting is carried out only in rubber gloves, preventing the oil solution from getting on the skin.
  3. Before applying the product, the wood must be cleaned with sandpaper and wiped with a cotton cloth just before the coating, removing dust from the product.
  4. Prepare a tool for applying oil painting.

Application of a protective fluid to wood can be carried out in several ways, using various tools:

  • brushes;
  • roller;
  • spray.

Using brushes of various sizes, you can paint small details of wooden structures, including ends, sections and other small structures. The roller will reduce the coating time for larger products and boards, while reducing the amount of material used. When working with a roller, it is recommended to prepare an additional brush for tinting bends, cracks, corners and other details.

If you have a sprayer, you can quickly and accurately paint the fence and entire structures made of wood. The impregnation in this method can be carried out without a brush, however, the used spray gun is not recommended for other types of work.

Thus, used engine oil is an excellent tool for impregnating, painting and protecting the fence, structures made of wood, metal and concrete parts. This tool is easy to use, cost and quite effective effect on the tree.

    Good afternoon Leonid! Please tell me how long it takes to dry an oak board after painting with used oil. The board is used for shelving in the basement. I want to cover the board with a layer of paint if possible, but the board has not yet dried completely. The board has dried for several years. With St. Andrew.

    In my opinion it will never dry for a very long time. But still I’ll try, because there is nothing else.And you need to soak on the balcony overhead wooden bars around the perimeter. If they do not dry, then of course there will be a problem. But then you can paint them and the paint will dry and harden, protect it from getting dirty when touched.

      oil needs to be applied heated, then absorbed quickly

    Hello! Please tell me, I want to lay floors from the OSB in the country, and cover it with waste machine oil. Then grind, and varnish. Tell me which one to choose is not expensive varnish. Thanks in advance.

    1. Valery

      After impregnation with mining, it is coated with bitumen varnish, the color is black. Will it suit you?

  4. Vladimir

    Hello! Please tell me whether it is necessary to boil the treatment before use? Thanks.

    1. Sergei

      The heated working off is absorbed faster and deeper, it does not make sense to boil and cool, the working off has long worked in the heated state. It is no longer possible to cover with varnish or paint - mining does not dry out completely. Color gives from light gray to gray-black with a hint of soot. It will not be brown. The point is to process surfaces that are not in contact with a person, hidden cavities, etc. The smell will scare away insects and mice for a long time, not nasty, not sharp, but smelling for a long time. The surface will be oily and when heated from the sun, oil will protrude.

    He covered with working-out translations for the floor in a dry room, after 5 years, wooden round translations scattered. The top layer where the whole is saturated with oil, and inside the tree is all yellow and fragile. The tree suffocated and rotted or something.

    Good afternoon, I have logs from a burnt house, they themselves did not burn, but they stink of burning, will mining work to eliminate odor? And I will put these lags in the living room, is it worth it? safely? on top of the board and on the board a fiberboard sheet. But this is if mining at all can eliminate the smell of burning from the lag. I really need answers, thanks)

    Do not even try practicing anything to cover the wooden. You clog the moisture inside. As a result, the decay of wood .. Nikolai, above, you have confirmed this. Only aqueous solutions for wood protection. At the "worst", if you really want to, cover only on one side ... The tree must breathe !!!
